Our story

Good data was everywhere.
Good decisions weren't.

Rumuli Global Research began with a frustration we knew first-hand: across Rwanda and the region, health systems were collecting more data than ever, yet too much of it sat unused while decisions were still made on gut feel and guesswork.

Having spent years inside national health data (in ministries, registries, and research), our team kept meeting the same gap: the science existed, the data existed, but the bridge to real action did not. So we set out to build it, and today Rumuli Global Research runs four flagship programmes doing exactly that.

Headquartered in Kigali, Rwanda, our programmes and partnerships currently run within Rwanda, with the methods and frameworks designed to extend across East Africa as partnerships grow.

Mission

Evidence that reaches the moment of decision.

To turn the health data Rwanda and East Africa already collect into evidence that reaches the moment it's needed (a budget reallocated, a referral pathway fixed, a hotspot targeted before it becomes a crisis), and to leave behind the local capacity to keep doing it without us.

Vision

No health decision made blind.

A region where routine health data, rigorously analysed, guides every decision, from a district health post weighing a referral, to a national ministry weighing a budget.

How we work

Evidence earns its keep at the point of decision.

Data that never reaches a ministry desk, a budget line, or a referral protocol is value left uncollected. Every programme is built to end at a decision, not a report.

We build with what already exists.

National registries, HMIS, surveys, and facility records already hold most of the answer. We integrate and interrogate this data before ever asking a partner to collect more of it.

Rigour is not negotiable.

Every model is validated, every prediction reported to recognised international standards, every claim traceable back to a defensible method, no exceptions for a tight deadline.

Capability stays behind.

Every engagement is designed to leave a partner institution more capable than it found them, not more dependent on us.

Privacy is a design constraint, not an afterthought.

De-identification, one-way hashing, and formal data-governance agreements are built into a pipeline from day one, never bolted on before publication.

Local first, globally rigorous.

Rooted in Rwanda and East Africa, held to the same reporting and validation standards used in any high-income health system.

How we operate

One mission, two ways to deliver it

Health problems don't split neatly into grant-funded and commercial work, so neither do we. Rumuli Global Research runs as a hybrid: a research and public-good track for donor- and grant-funded science, and an advisory track for institutional clients. Revenue from advisory work reinvests directly in the research mission; the research keeps the whole team at the frontier.

Health is entering an era defined by data and AI, yet data alone doesn't save lives, and few teams can turn it into decisions a ministry can trust. That gap is exactly where we work. Our team brings the rare combination this moment demands: applied data science, machine learning, biostatistics, epidemiology and public health, fused with hands-on knowledge of how real health systems and national data actually behave. Our approach

The same four stages behind every programme

The same four-stage method underlies every Rumuli Global Research programme, the reason our outputs are comparable, auditable, and reusable across health problems.

Integrate

Link existing national datasets (registries, HMIS, surveys, facility records) without new data collection or risky individual-level re-identification.

Model

Apply spatiotemporal, causal, and machine-learning methods suited to the question, never a single default technique.

Validate

Internal and temporal cross-validation, sensitivity analysis, and reporting to recognised international standards (e.g. TRIPOD+AI).

Deploy

Translate findings into dashboards, maps, and decision-support tools embedded in the systems partners already use.

What partners ask us first

Do your programmes require new data collection?

No. All four flagship programmes are built entirely on data Rwanda already collects (registries, HMIS, national surveys, and facility records), which keeps implementation cost and timeline low.

How is patient privacy protected?

All analysis uses de-identified or one-way-hashed data under formal institutional data-governance agreements, in line with Rwanda's data protection law. No directly identifying information is accessible to the research team at any stage.

What does a partnership look like?

We work as a grant-funded research partner, a technical advisory partner, or both, structured around a specific programme, a specific deliverable, or unrestricted capacity-building support.
